What is it?

Grand CanyonThe Grand to Grand Ultra is the first- and, so far, only- self-supported footrace in North America. The race takes place in September each year. It starts from the jaw droppingly scenic North rim of the Grand Canyon and finishes on the Grand Staircase- hence ‘Grand to Grand’.

Just like the MdS you have to carry everything you need for the week except a tent on your back- food, equipment etc. You will also need to supply a medical certificate and ECG before the race.

How Far is it?

The Grand to Grand is a stage race, covering approximately 167 miles (268km) over 6 days; the first 2 stages are around 30 miles, then stage 3 is the ‘long stage’ of about 50 miles and must be completed in 34 hours.  Stages 4 and 5 are around marathon distance, with a ‘fun run’ of around 9 miles to finish for stage 6.

What’s it Like?

According to the official website, competitors can expect terrain including desert, forest trails, slot canyons, rocky roads and river crossings. Oh, and let’s not forget that this is the Grand Canyon, one of the Natural Wonders of the World, so the views are a-w-e-s-o-m-e…

How Much is it?

Ah- here’s the crux. Price. Entry is a cool $3,200 per person and doesn’t include flights, so you’ll have to find your own way to Las Vegas. There is also an quota limit imposed for each country, currently 10 entrants for the UK.

Do I Want to Do it?

Hell, yes!! Being a stage race you get more time to relax and enjoy the event, make friends, appreciate the scenery etc. And… it’s open to walkers, not just runners! This one’s most definitely going on the life list!
